The visibility of the Filter List can be toggled by the F4 key.

The list includes an incremental find feature that allows you to quickly locate a name just by typing the first few characters.
Right clicking on a pupil name shows the pupils info. Many diary operations can be done from within the filter. Click the menu button to see what is available.
